Petrol vs Diesel vs EV: Which One Should You Actually Buy in 2026?
By AutoBharosa Team
Petrol still makes sense for buyers driving under 1,000 km/month — lower upfront cost, easier servicing, better resale on most hatchbacks. Diesel pays back only if you cross 1,500 km/month consistently; the premium is roughly Rs 1.2-1.8 lakh, and you need 3-4 years to recover it. EVs are now genuinely viable for city users with home charging: running cost is 80% lower than petrol, but resale value is still uncertain and battery warranty terms vary. Our rule of thumb: EV for predictable city commuters with parking, petrol for everyone else, diesel only for highway-heavy users.
